Attention Grade 5-8 Teachers in the Hamilton and Burlington Area:
This educational initiative represents a unique partnership between area businesses, the advertising department and Newspaper in Education (Classroom Connection) at The Hamilton Spectator.
After engaging in an exploration of The Hamilton Spectator and print advertising, students are offered the opportunity to develop an advertisement for a local business. A curriculum-based resource package addressing language, visual arts and media literacy expectations will be emailed by early February.
Three finalist ad designs will be chosen for each class and featured in a special online section to be uploaded March 25, 2024. People will then have an opportunity to vote for their favourite March 25 – April 21, 2024. A link will be provided to all participating educators.
Please note the following:
- The number of registrants is limited.
- Target grade level is grades 5-8.
- The Spectator’s ePaper will be made available to all participating classes. No printed newspapers will be delivered to schools.
- Deadline for registration: January 26, 2024
Thanks to sponsorship from area businesses, this program is offered FREE of charge to a limited number of teachers in the Hamilton/Burlington areas.
DESIGN-AN-AD CONTEST RULES 2024
1. Agreement: These rules govern the Design-An- Ad Contest (the “Contest”). No purchase is necessary to enter the Contest. The act of entering the Contest constitutes acceptance of the Contest rules and the decisions of the Participating Advertiser and voting public, which decisions shall be final and binding upon all entrants.
2. Sponsor: The Contest sponsor is The Hamilton Spectator, a publication of Metroland Media Group Ltd. (the “Sponsor”).
3. Eligibility: The Contest is open to Ontario students in Grades 5 through 8 who are enrolled in a class that is registered for The Hamilton Spectator’s Classroom Connection Program entitled Design-An-Ad at the start of the Contest Period. Notwithstanding the above, the contest is not open to employees, their immediate families (i.e. spouses or biological, step or adoptive parents, children or siblings) or anyone domiciled with any employee of the Sponsor or Participating Advertiser or any of their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, representatives, agents, (including advertising or promotional agencies) or fulfilment houses. Limit of one (1) entry per person. Incomplete or illegible entries or electronically reproduced entries will not be accepted and will be disqualified.
4. Contest and Judging Criteria: To enter the Contest, you must create an original advertisement for the participating advertiser assigned by the Sponsor for your classroom (the “Participating Advertiser”). Your advertisement may include artwork and/or poetry (the “Contest Material”). All entries will be collected by the entrants’ classroom teachers and emailed to the Sponsor at dfrate@thespec.com. Entries must include the original advertisement, your first name, last initial, and a signed Parental Consent and Release Form that gives you permission to participate in the contest.
Contest begins February 5, 2024 upon receipt by the classroom teacher of the name and relevant business details for the Participating Advertiser that has been assigned to the class and ends at 5:30 pm ET on February 28, 2024. Each entrant must have the consent of his/her parent or legal guardian in order to enter the Contest. The parent or legal guardian must complete and sign the Parental Consent and Release form including the entrant’s name and the parent’s or legal guardian’s name. If a parent or legal guardian does not provide consent to enter the Contest or the Sponsor does not receive a completed and signed consent form, the entry will be disqualified.
The eligible entries for each Participating Advertiser will be judged March 1-10, 2024, by that Participating Advertiser. The Participating Advertiser will select three finalist advertisements (the “Finalists”) based on the following three (3) criteria, weighted equally: (1) originality; (2) creativity; and (3) inclusion of business details provided to the classroom. In the event of a tie, the entry with the highest score on creativity will be selected.
The Finalists for each advertiser will be featured on https://www.thespec.com/community/newspaper-in-education/creative-kids-voting-2024/article_61202eac-d813-5a05-8236-f724ce4a7d4d.html from March 25, 2024 to April 21, 2024. During that period of time, members of the public will have the opportunity to view the Finalists and vote on their favourite for each Participating Advertiser. The Finalist with the most votes for each Participating Advertiser will be declared the winner for that Participating Advertiser.
By entering this Contest, you acknowledge that all entries become the property of the Sponsor and will not be returned or acknowledged. To be eligible, an entry must be the entrant’s original hand drawn design or poetry, may not have been entered in any other contest, won any other prize or have been previously published in any other medium. In connection with your submission, each entrant and their parent or legal guardian affirms, represents and/or warrants that they (i) owns or has the necessary licenses, rights, consents and permissions to use and to authorize Sponsor to use all copyright or other proprietary rights in and to the submission to enable inclusion and use of the submission in the manner contemplated by these Contest rules; and (ii) they have the written consent, release and/or permission of each and every identifiable individual person in the submission to use the name or likeness of each and every such identifiable individual person to enable inclusion and use of the submission in the matter contemplated by these Contest rules. Sponsor reserves the right to reject, remove and/or disqualify any submission that could be offensive or inappropriate or that does not meet the terms and conditions of these rules.
