École élémentaire Pavillon de la jeunesse, located next to Sherwood Secondary School, has received the province’s approval to tender a $5-million addition that will include 49 child-care spaces.
The Ministry of Education is giving a French public elementary school on Hamilton Mountain an extra $3.4 million for a three-classroom addition that will provide 49 child-care spaces.
East Hamilton-Stoney Creek MPP Neil Lumsden announced that École élémentaire Pavillon de la jeunesse has received approval to tender the $5-million project in an April 17 news release.
French school board communications director Steve Lapierre said via email that the ministry provided an initial $1.6 million for the addition a few years ago but put it on hold.

He said rising construction costs required extra funding and the board will seek city site-plan approval as soon as possible, with the aim of opening the daycare centre in September 2025.
The program will be run by a non-profit partner and delivered in French, helping ensure a smooth transition for children enrolling in one of the board’s schools, he added.
“We are excited for this project to be completed and eager to welcome our first children at the daycare centre,” Lapierre said.
The former Sherwood Heights public elementary school is located next door to Sherwood Secondary School, which is undergoing renovations and scheduled to reopen this September.
