“We are doing it to raise the visibility of all three organizations and how important culture is to our community,” said Kathryn Drury, chief executive officer and chief librarian at the Grimsby library.

The event is Friday, May 10 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Grimsby Public Art Gallery and Library on Carnegie Lane.
“It will be a fun night,” said Drury, who noted the gala includes music, wine tasting, an art exhibit and a live and silent auction.
Last year the event raised about $17,000 and was split evenly between the three organizations.
“This year we would like to support some programming for the summer reading program for kids,” said Drury, who added the money received last year helped pay for new media lab equipment including a 3-D printer, scanner and computer software.

“We’re sort of off the beaten path, so a lot of people don’t know we exist, so this is a great way for people to learn about us and to learn what we do at the museum,” said Janet Oakes, manager/curator of the museum on Murray Street.
“We hold on to a lot of Grimsby history, we collect artifacts from Grimsby families and Grimsby businesses, things that were manufactured in Grimsby and we also collect a lot of archives form the community.”
Like last year, funds from the gala will go to support a permanent exhibit the museum is creating.
“We are working on an exhibit that will always have Grimsby history in there because even though we do celebrate a lot of Grimsby history, we don’t always have the entire story out on display and that’s what people are looking for,” Oakes said.
“We are going to have an exhibit that runs from the (Indigenous) Neutral Nation all the way up until today.”
Caitlin Sutherland, manager/curator of Grimsby Public Art Gallery, said the gala is a way for it to connect with residents.
“Get ourselves out there to different audiences that may not encounter us on a daily basis,” Sutherland said.

She said last year’s funds were used to upgrade the gallery’s on-site storage facilities and this year the money will support programs and exhibitions.
