A Burlington woman was watching the Toronto Maple Leafs game when she realized she won the lottery, according to the OLG.
Lori Keenan won a $100,000 top prize with Instant Jazzy Riches, the Ontario Gaming and Lottery Corporation said.
Keenan, a longtime lottery player, said she chose the ticket at the New Street Fortinos in Burlington because of its “purple and vibrant colour,” the OLG said.
“I was watching the Leafs game while I scratched the ticket and thought I won $1,000. I scanned the ticket on the OLG app and saw more zeros. I had to scan it again — I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” she said in an OLG release.
Keenan woke up her husband, saying, “I think I won the lottery,” the OLG said, adding that her husband also could not believe it was real.
“We didn’t sleep that night and I can’t even remember if the Leafs won. It felt like a dream, and I kept thinking, ‘How did I end up with this ticket?’ I am so thankful for this win.”
Keenan plans to invest some of her winnings, as well as treat herself to a little shopping spree, the OLG said.
The OLG also announced recently it is making fourth quarter (Jan. 1 to March 31) payments of $28,341,209 to 29 communities that host gaming facilities.
During OLG’s fiscal year (April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024), the 29 communities have received $146,310,602, the OLG said in a release.
“For decades, profits from gaming have been an important source of funding for Ontario communities, helping to deliver vital services and making a real difference for gaming host municipalities,” said Peter Bethlenfalvy, minister of finance. “This is one of the many different ways Ontario continues to create good-paying, local jobs that play a critical role in supporting our economy, while ensuring a socially responsible gaming environment for people to enjoy.”
The OLG has begun piloting self-serve lottery terminals in select retail locations, mainly in the GTA.
The terminals offer customers a new safe, secure and convenient way to purchase lottery products, the OLG said.
Customers can use the terminals to purchase national and regional lottery games, as well as a broad selection of the most popular instant tickets, using a debit or credit card, the OLG said in a release.
“OLG continues to look for new ways to deliver engaging gaming experiences that create value for our retail partners and for the Province of Ontario,” said Nancy Kennedy, OLG’s chief lottery and customer officer. “Self-serve terminals will help us meet evolving consumer and retailer preferences while maintaining a strong commitment to responsible play.”
