Pair of traffic stops yield more than eight million contraband cigarettes: OPP

One stop in Haldimand on April 22 yielded two cases and 14 cartons of unmarked cigarettes, police said. Another in Brant on April 25 saw 42,000 cartons recovered and a trailer impounded.

Two men, a 62-year-old from St. Catharines and a 40-year-old from Brantford, were charged with several offences under the Tobacco Tax Act, police said.

Police seized a total of 8,422,800 unstamped smokes, equivalent to roughly 842 cases, from the traffic stops. The Ministry of Finance said the seizures helped recover more than $2.9 million in federal and provincial tobacco tax losses.
