A royal beginning for battlefield monument

Queen Mary unveils monument to the Battle of Stoney Creek, from London

1 min to read

The Wentworth Historical Society began discussions in the 1890s about building a memorial to casualties of the Battle of Stoney Creek.

But, the Women’s Committee and the men of the society could not agree on a site. The Women’s Committee subsequently broke away, forming the Women’s Wentworth Historical Society in 1899. They raised the funds to purchase the house and erect a monument which was formally opened on June 6, 1913, when Queen Mary pushed a button in England, telegraphically unveiling the monument.
